A hepatology consultation is an evaluation with a physician specializing in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of liver diseases. This consultation aims to evaluate and diagnose liver-related conditions and provide treatment recommendations. Hepatology consultations are important for individuals with liver disease, such as viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, steatotic liver disease (formerly called fatty liver disease), autoimmune liver diseases, or any other liver-related conditions, or those at increased risk for liver disease. Follow-up consultations for ongoing management will be scheduled as appropriate.
During your visit, a hepatologist will review your medical history, perform a physical examination, and order additional diagnostic tests that can include blood tests, imaging studies, or a liver biopsy to assess further and evaluate the liver. Based on the evaluation, the hepatologist will develop a personalized treatment plan, including dietary and lifestyle modifications, medications, or referrals to other specialists.
